Stability of Wood Print E-mail
{tab=DIMENSIONAL WOOD STABILITY}
The numbers in the chart reflect the dimensional change coefficient for the various species, measured as tangential shrinkage or swelling within normal moisture content limits of 6-14 percent. Tangential change values will normally reflect changes in plainsawn wood. Quartersawn wood will usually be more dimensionally stable than plainsawn.
The dimensional change coefficient can be used to calculate expected shrinkage or swelling. In actual practice, however, change would be diminished in a complete floor, as the boards’ proximity to each other tends to restrain movement. What all this is really saying is that the lower the change coefficient, the less your floor will move and the less your floor moves, the better. {gallery}3{/gallery} Although some tropical woods such as Australian cypress, Brazilian cherry, merbau and wenge appear in this chart to have excellent moisture stability compared to domestic oak, actual installations of many of these woods have demonstrated significant movement in use. To avoid problems later, extra care should be taken to inform potential users of these tendencies prior to purchase.

{tab=What is the Janka Harness?} If you ask your self what is all about the Janka Hardness Floorsincalifornia.com will explain that The Janka Hardness is a test In wich we measure the hardness of the wood.

{/tabs} In the Janka Hardness test Floors in california measures the force required to push a steel ball with a diameter of 11.28 millimeters ( 0.444 inches )into the wood to a depth of half the ball's diameter (the diameter was chosen to produce a circle with an area of 100 square millimeters).

In the past the Janka harness test were expressed in units of pressure, but when the American Society for Testing and Materials standardized the test it called for results in units of force.

Hardwood Floor Refinish Test:

  • Go to a high-traffic area where the wood floor takes the most abuse. Add a tablespoon of water onto the floor. If the water forms beads, the wood floor is properly sealed. At most, cleaning and maintenance is needed.
  • If the water takes a few minutes to seep in and only darkens the floor slightly, the finish is partially worn. Don't wait too long to refinish the floor or at least add and extra floor coating ( buffing )
  • If the water soaks right in and leaves a dark spot, it's definitely time to refinish just call 866-670-1239 to set up your free consultation
